18th Street Distillery

This is a branding set that I created for Hammond, IN’s 18th Street Distillery. I wanted a graphic, consistent theme for all of the spirits, while giving a nod to historic spirit branding. The snake stays the same throughout all labels, but the foreground vegetation and background change due to the ingredients used.

For the label itself I added a die cut scalloped edge and a metallic foil stamping on areas of the label that are colored. Most info is then hand written onto the label.

Not shown is the neck band of each, which is only visible after the tamper resistant wrap is taken opened.

Three spot illustrations and a running border design that were created for the ‘INDY TIKI: THE RUM DIARIES’ story. The article was a feature on local Indianapolis Tiki bars and culture.

DRNK CLTR

DRNK CLTR (Drink Culture) is an Indianapolis based podcast that showcases folks around Indy who are making things happen. I wanted to capture some of what they do in a graphic illustration that draws you in the way the podcast does.

18th Street Brewery RESTLESS QUEEN

The original concept of this was Queen of Diamonds- but that name was taken and through research I came up with the name RESTLESS QUEEN, which became a fun name to illustrate. 

18th Street Brewery HERE COMES THE REAPER

The original idea for this label was much more complicated, but I stripped it way down and really dig the simplicity/graphicness of it.

Its always fun to work with Mikkeller. Check out the Henry and Sally characters from Mikkeller's artist Keith Shore in the whirlpool;).

I mean, this one basically drew itself. 

18th Street Brewery Nickel and Dime

My wife and I went through a pretty crazy house renovation where every damn thing cost way more money than we thought it was going too...so these came from experience. The original idea was to sell a 4pk with 2 of each beer, so that you were literally Nickel and Dime'd every time.

One to those situations where it was like 'Oh boy, WTF am I going to do with this name??'. After a ton of sketches I finally came up w this idea while walking the dogs. 

18th Street Brewery and Collective Arts Brewing Powdered Dreams

Collective Arts is a really cool brewery out of Canada and Maine. Got to sit and talk with the owner for awhile while they were brewing and realized he was cool w whatever I did with this label. I really had no idea where it was going but I love how it turned out. 

18th Street Brewery Pins and Needles

My wife and I were talking about going out to Sante Fe when this label came up. I think that kind of influenced me. 

18th Street Brewery and PIPEWORKS Brewing Co. 

It was a long time coming but it was worth the wait to brew an in house collab with the homies from PIPEWORKS Brewing Co. Had a lot of fun with this one, especially that hair. 

18th Street Brewery and Kuma's Corner Defiance Alliance

18th Street and Kuma's!!!??? I mean, wow. A whole crew of Kuma's Corner folks came down to brew and hang out, and the name Defiance Alliance was born. I wanted to pay tribute to Kuma's logo with the orange circle and bear skulls, while keeping in our own realm w the burning hop, skull, and snakes.

Our first Pilsner was brewed in 2016, and I created the bottom label for it. However, after re brewing the beer and re concepting, I redesigned the label to be more cosmic and psychedelic- perfect to pound any time of the year.

Flowers and skeletons, some of the most fun things to draw. OMINOUS GIFT is a wild ale that was barrel aged with Brett added. 

18th Street Brewery and Journeyman Distillery's BLACK RAVEN EXODUS

This was a barrel aged version of 18th Street's BLACK EXODUS Oatmeal Stout aged in Journeyman Distillery's 'LAST FEATHER' (previously RAVENSWOOD RYE') Whiskey Barrels. 

18th Street Brewery's Here Comes the Wolf

I love that we as a brewery and myself as an artist were able to release this beer on Inauguration Day of 2017.

This is a personal fave, and I don't now how this image ended up into being. I burned through a ton of sketches and ideas that weren't working and somehow this came out.

Type driven and wallpaper-esque, that's what I wanted for this label. In fact, it has been made as wallpaper for the 18th Street Brewery's Hammond Brewpub. 

18th Street Brewery's The Contessa

This beer was brewed as a gift for couple's wedding anniversary. 'CONTESSA' is a pet name between the two and well...I just kind of went with it. They are still together;). 

18th Street Brewery and Transient Artisan Ales Zero Discipline

Skulls, psych patterns, flaming eyeballs, I mean, the beer is called Zero Discipline---it basically drew itself!

18th Street Brewery's Rise of the Angels

I think that my wife had been down in New Orleans around the time I illustrated this label. Her pics of parades and second lines got me thinking- if an angel is going to rise, it is going to need some musical motivation. 

18th Street Brewery's STEEL HANDS

Steel Hands is an EXTRA SPECIAL BITTER style of beer. I liked the idea of the steel being the blade and the hand-cuffs, simaltaneously allowing and denying the hands to act on their own will. And, the blade and thorned stem create an 18.

We used this for t-shirts, advertisements, and even a beer label (TWISTED ENGAGEMENT).

Ahhhhhh yes, that moment when you realize that the student has become the teacher.  

18th Street Brewery's Oh, So Pretty

This is a very fun beer- dry, floral, and a bit spicy. Working off a 'saison' template I had made I was able to add in little drawings (such as the lips) and flourishes (the hops) to let this one stand on its own. This illustration was actually nominated in the USA Today's Top Ten Beer Labels 2016. 

La Margarita's 5th Annual Fountain Square Pinball Tournament. 

This is the 3rd poster I have created for the annual tournament. Each year the organizer, Jon, comes up with a short story for me to base the illustration off of. This year (2016) was based in a dystopian/mad maxian universe. 

18th Street Brewery and Girl and the Goat's Fox and the Goat

We were extremely happy to team up with Stephanie Izard and Gary Valentine of Girl and the Goat (Duck Duck Goat, Little Goat, etc) to brew this beautiful Pale Ale. It was a lot of fun working the the Goat crew to come up with this fun, whimsical illustration. Stephanie loved it;)

18th Street Brewery and Mikkeller Grapefruit Dead T-Shirt

For the 2nd brewing of our GRAPEFRUIT DEAD collab I was able to create the tee shirt graphic to be released at the same time as the beer.  

18th Street Brewery Brewski's Funky Trim

We brewed this dry hopped brett pale ale with Sweden's Brewski brewery. 

18th Street Brewery's Best Patio Pils

We brewed a pilsner to exclusively serve in cans at our outdoor patio. I wanted to make a collage of a bunch of 'SUMMER' activities. Included are: shorts, grills, JARTS (conveniently located stuck through a hand), a '92 convertible mustang, fireworks, sprinklers, flying V guitars, etc...you know, all the ingredients needed for an epic summer. 

18th Street Brewery's MOONWALK

Label made for an India Pale Ale in 6pk 12oz can format. This one was a bit tough in that as 18th is based in Gary, IN, 'MOONWALK' is 98% associated with a famous pop star. Not wanting to be sued or on the recieving end of a Cease and Desist, I took it to the moon. The reflection was a lot of fun, and this was my first time working with 3D text in Photoshop.

Atomic Whale

Atomic Whale merch and bottles. This was a collaboration we did with Denmark's Mikkeller, in conjunction with the Mikkeller Running Club and 18th Street Brewery's own group, Local One Eight. 20% of the sales of bottles and merch went to Savethewhales.org. The release of this beer was preceded by a 5k run down the historic Monon Trail in Hammond. 

18th Street Brewery's LAKE STREET EXPRESS

Label made for a Session Pale Ale in 6pk 12oz can format. I had started this label in early 2014 as a 22oz format. However, it was pushed back and ended up being the last label I completed in 2014 and the first label printed in 2015. It works beautifully in person as it is printed on foil- so some parts of the label shine as the light hits it.

We have begun to expand on this series and now have CASCADE EXPRESS and CITRA EXPRESS. 

18th Street Brewery's Devil's Conclave

I wanted this label to have a lot of movement- I wanted it to feel as though you were in the middle of a private assembly with the Devil...because I doubt that meeting would be very calm. 

The Reverend Horton Heat Licensed Apparel

I was stoked to work with Chicago's Victory Records on a couple of pieces of merch for the legendary Psychobilly rocker The Reverend Horton Heat! I created illustrations for a bandanna and a t-shirt for the Rev's 2014 release on Victory Records called 'REV'. Please note that I did the illustration for the t-shirt, not the text. 

 18th Street Brewery's 'Hunter' Double Milk Stout

'Hunter' was named after the brewer's son. I found out that Hunter really likes animé and manga. That knowledge gave me a good stepping stone to make the illustration personal yet approachable for any consumer. 18th St. liked the label illustration so much that we decided to do an asymmetrical design to show it off. The beer and label art has taken on a life of its own.

18th Street Brewery's 'Galaxy Slayer' Double IPA

18th St. Brewery got there hands on a bunch of 'GALAXY' hops and brewed up this 8.5% Double IPA. 'Galaxy Slayer' seemed like a perfect name, and a great starting point for me. 

*Galaxy Slayer was updated in mid-2015. The update is shown in the first two images.

18th Street Brewery wanted to revamp their original Compass Rose logo. With Through the mixture of hard edges, fluid lines, overlapping elements and organic materials I feel I was able to show their hard-working, attentive, unique- yet classic approach to craft brewing. 

NONES Double Header Promo

NONES were going out on a two shows in two days tiny tour and decided to call it the Double Header. Going off the idea of 'Double Header' I drew up this guy to help bring it to life. All text is hand drawn. 

NONES 7inch Record Sleeve and Insert

7 inch record sleeve and inserts for the self-titled NONES EP on Hozac Records.
